Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis. In the interior of the province of Valencia, less than an hour’s drive from the capital, a hiking route awaits us that will surprise us with its fascinating cultural heritage.

Between the towns of Calles and Chelva, we will walk along the remains of an impressive Roman aqueduct: the Peña Cortada Aqueduct.

Peña Cortada Aqueduct

Peña Cortada Aqueduct: history and characteristics In the 1st century AD, the Romans built this aqueduct by carving a large part of it directly into the rock of the mountain. It was built to channel water from the weir of the river Tuéjar. Although until now it has not been known for certain where the water was channelled to, a recent study affirms that the aqueduct carried water to the centre of the city of Valencia. Therefore, this aqueduct would have been 98.6 km long and would have been the largest aqueduct in ancient Hispania. Today, different parts of the aqueduct are preserved along a total length of 28 km, and it is possible to walk inside it. The landscape left by this impressive construction is amazing, with that “Peña Cortada” from which the Romans extracted rock, as well as the bridge that rises 33 metres so that the aqueduct could cross the ravine. This route is about 13.3 km long and has a gradient of 402 metres, so it is quite easy to do. Here I leave you the track of the route linked in case you want to do it. We started from Calles, passed the Fuente del Sapejo and got into the Rambla de Alcotas, where there is a small bridge and the path is suitable with stairs.
